| Since 2001 UsMoms has grown to support 3000+ impoverished single parent families in the GVRD by providing free weekly boxes of nutritious foods, free clothing, free furniture and household items, along with our free self-reliance programs. It is our goal to end the generational cycle of poverty, one family member at a time. |
ATTENTION:
UsMoms Community Projects has had to TEMPORARILY close down our free food
program. Our organization unexpectedly lost the use of the property used to house our
infrastructure for safely dealing with food products and sanitizing the food bins. Due to
the suddenness of the loss, we were unable to put together the funds quick enough to
move into a properly zoned commercial building. Click here to read updates on reopening

UsMoms is very appreciative of the rapid support our families received from our long
standing community partners during this crisis. Within days, The Greater Vancouver Food
Bank moved all of our families to a food bank located at the same site where City Reach
Care Society has been graciously hosting UsMoms' weekly Free Food Day since September
2005. Both organizations are to be commended for their caring and rapid response to help
us meet the emergency food needs of our families!
But, the families are desperately asking for the UsMoms' food programs to be
re-opened. Our food program met more than emergency food needs. Per our mandate,
our food program is designed to meet the on-going nutritional needs for individual family
members to thrive and have the capacity to learn to become permanently self-reliant. The
families are reporting that in the months since we had to close the free food program, that
they are struggling on a daily basis to deal with the loss of the fresh fruits and vegetables in
their diets, the loss of the fresh bread from Cobbs Bakeries for their children's school
lunches, and overall the loss of enough food each week to be able to keep their children
performing well at school and socially. In recent weeks the parents have reported their
children are experiencing a sharp rise in the return of the behavioural and health problems
that have been scientifically linked to chronic hunger.
The parents really want us to stress the fact that they truly appreciate the help they receive
from the Greater Vancouver Food Bank. But they also want people in the general public to
know and understand that the GVFB's mandate is to meet the emergency food needs only.
Like all parents around the world, these parents fear for the safety and health of their
children. These parents are wisely asking for help to be able to provide enough nutritious
food to enable their children to grow up to be healthy and productive adults.
