President: Gina Williams - 26 years at the Royal Bank of Canada
Gina has volunteered for UsMoms in numerous capacities over the past five years before becoming the
President of the Board. Gina spent many years as a single mom solely responsible for her children. She
knows and understands the challenges our single parents face on a daily basis. Gina chose to commit her
time to UsMoms because she believes in UsMoms' mandate to assist the parents to become fully self-reliant.
Currently Gina also functions as the Chief Financial Officer for UsMoms' 2007 Budget. The years that Gina
spent at the Royal Bank in various positions including management will serve UsMoms well, as our President
has a firm view of managing a budget.
Vice-President: Katie Sabourin - Hospitality Industry - Administration
Katie was one of the founders of UsMoms and over the years has dedicated thousands of hours in her
capacity as the Associate Director of Programs. Katie believes growing up in the household of a single parent
has helped her know what a single parent needs to teach their children so that the children can grow up to
be healthy, productive adults.
Katie operates the free food program and oversees dozens of volunteers. The parent volunteers are very
fond of Katie and appreciate her natural compassion and wisdom.
Currently, until the free food program is re-instated, Katie is in the Chicago area. Katie is looking into starting
up an initial chapter of UsMoms in the USA due to the persistent interest expressed from so many
organizations that represent the needs of single parents with financial challenges.
Secretary: Deborrah Johnson - UsMoms client for 6 years
Deborrah has been a single mom and grandmother for many years. Deborrah has faced the myriad of
challenges that are a daily part of being a parent coping with a disability, while trying to raise her children
alone. Deborrah joined UsMoms to get assistance with feeding her grandson and has stayed on as a parent
volunteer ever since. Deborrah fondly is known as the "rent-a-grandma" and also for her talented recipes.
Deborrah gladly teaches other parents how to make healthy meals out of limited resources.
In addition to volunteering for UsMoms, Deborrah volunteers for a local thrift shop. Deborrah is adamant that
it is important to volunteer as much as a person can, no matter what disability a person has. Deborrah
believes volunteering in any capacity, even for an hour or two a week, can keep a person from developing an
unhealthy view of being dependent on the Province and taxpayers for disability income. This view has helped
Deborrah and the numerous other parents who have disabilities that Deborrah works with.
Deborrah offers the board a client's view of our programs, and a volunteer's view of our human resources
needs. Both views help the Board make the important decisions that keep our organization functioning with
only two paid employees.
General Board Member: Todd Desangne - IT Developer - EA
Todd comes from a single parent household and also from a First nations background. These experiences
led to Todd entering the social services sector as a young man. Todd has worked in many capacities
delivering much needed programs in communities that face unique problems associated with poverty and
abuses of various types. Todd has a deep felt commitment to improving the world that he lives in.
Todd originally became acquainted with UsMoms when he applied for a job opening in 2004. Instead of taking
the job, Todd wisely went into post secondary education. But, Todd has stayed committed to UsMoms ever
since.
Todd has limited time to volunteer since graduating from his IT training, and taking a full time job as a game
tester. The job requires long hours everyday. So volunteering to serve on UsMoms board and to be available
for answering our IT questions is Todd's way of continuing to improve the world that he lives in.
General Board Member: Becca Harvey, MBA - Eco-Development
Consultant
Becca has a passionate commitment to developing "green" communities and works around the globe as a
consultant. Becca first became interested in UsMoms when UsMoms began our community garden projects
for the children in 2004. She applied to be the Program Director, but suddenly got called away to care for her
ailing mother. Then she travelled to Africa to work with non-profit projects to set-up community gardens in
severely impoverished communities. Becca contacted Usmoms as soon as she returned to Canada, and has
since joined the board to help us with our plans for developing a "green" building as our headquarters for
UsMoms.
Becca is particularly known for her ability to remember dozens of jokes off the top of her head, so she loves
the idea that UsMoms is starting with the JOKE-A-THON to raise money for a "green" building.
