UsMoms Community Projects is a non-profit society registered in British Columbia, Canada. The
word UsMoms is an acronym for "United Single Mothers Organic Market Support."
UsMoms is a service that was conceived and begun by single parents in April 2001. Every week the
service provides free food boxes to single parents who are in need of nutritional support for the
health and well being of their family. Most of the fresh fruits and vegetables in the weekly boxes are
organic which provides a more available nutrients to rapidly improve the health of chronically
undernourished and underfed family members.
On September 9, 2002, UsMoms Community Projects became a registered B.C. Society. A Board of
Directors was convened. Karen Sabourin went from being the full time volunteer Administrator to
the Executive Director. Katie Sabourin was appointed the Associate Director, as she had already been
volunteering in this capacity for 40-50 hours per week for a year.
Together these two women manage the numerous programs that are housed within the organization.
The recipient parents volunteer to do the majority of the work that is needed to make these award
winning programs function on a daily basis, with additional support from volunteer community
members when necessary.
In the few short years of being in operation, UsMoms Community Projects has grown from serving 7
families in October 2001 to having over 3000 families on our roster in December 2006 through
various food programs. The numbers grow on a daily basis.
The dramatic growth in the numbers of single parent families who are in need of food has
demonstrated the high need for a building to warehouse and distribute the food according to health
and safety codes, as well as having the space to provide the numerous self-reliance programs. Plans
are underway to raise the money to be able to move into our own world class "green" building.
